Letters & Sounds
At Little Acorns Pre-school the children are always actively involved in high quality Communication and Language activities.
In order to enhance children’s learning further we take part in a government teaching programme called ‘Letters and Sounds’.
This is designed to develop children’s listening skills, vocabulary, phonological awareness, oral blending and segmenting of words all of these factors support children in their reading and writing skills when they go to school.
The pre-school will only concentrate on phase 1 of Letters & Sounds in preparation for school, which will include the following:
- Have fun with sounds
- Listen carefully
- Develop their vocabulary
- Speak confidently to adults and other children
- Tune into sounds
- Listen and remember sounds
- Understand that spoken words are made up of different sounds
Sign & Rhyme
Children also have the opportunity to take part in weekly Sign & Rhyme sessions from a Makaton Sign Language professional. This is to support children’s speech & language from the age of 2 years.
To further support our children we activly encourage children and parents to share books.
All children receive a book bag when starting at Little Acorns to carry their work home in.
We also provide a library service, where children are encouraged to choose a book to take home and read with their family.
